2023 Data Center Industry Development Trends Outlook

Release date:

2023-02-18

At the beginning of 2023, next-generation data centers, powered by technologies such as 5G, the industrial internet, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence, are bringing entirely new perspectives to industries across the board.

According to data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, China's data center market size grew from 21.03 billion yuan in 2013 to 149.42 billion yuan in 2020. This signifies that, in the era of global digital transformation, China's digital development is emerging as a core driving force in national competitiveness. Meanwhile, data centers—critical infrastructure underpinning digital advancement—are now entering a new phase of rapid growth and innovation.

At the beginning of 2023, next-generation data centers, leveraging technologies such as 5G, the industrial internet, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence, are bringing entirely new perspectives to industries across the board. In 2023, data centers will face both greater opportunities and challenges, while also showcasing several emerging development trends. According to the "Three-Year Action Plan for the Development of Next-Generation Data Centers (2021–2023)," released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, we can analyze these trends from the following key aspects:

First, cloud computing and edge computing will continue to converge. Edge computing reduces the need for centralized remote processing, analysis, and decision-making, thereby lowering latency and alleviating bandwidth constraints. Compared to traditional cloud computing models, edge computing offers advantages such as real-time data processing and analysis, enhanced security, robust privacy protection, superior scalability, location-aware capabilities, and reduced traffic volume. In the future, edge computing will evolve synergistically with cloud computing, creating a complementary relationship. Edge data centers refer to data centers deployed closer to where data is generated and consumed, enabling faster, lower-latency, and more efficient services. Clearly, edge data centers are stepping into the spotlight. In the 5G era, end-users will be seamlessly integrated into a tightly coupled cloud-edge-end architecture that connects cloud data centers, edge data centers, and user devices.

Second, the level of automation in data analysis and mining will increase significantly. As we all know, applications like ChatGPT, Dall-E, Lensa AI, and GitHub Copilot enable computers to generate content—such as text, images, audio, video, and code—using machine learning algorithms. These cutting-edge tools, unveiled in early 2023, are rapidly accelerating the further advancement of artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, AI is having multifaceted impacts on the data center industry, enhancing data center management, boosting productivity and infrastructure efficiency, reducing energy consumption and operational costs, and elevating both computing power and service quality. With the ongoing development of AI, data centers now face increasingly stringent requirements: high throughput, exceptional reliability, minimal latency, seamless support for server virtualization, and a commitment to sustainability and low carbon emissions—driving a comprehensive transformation and modernization of data center operations.

Third, visual and interactive data analytics will become increasingly popular. Visualization tools can make complex, large-scale, and diverse datasets easier to understand, present, and interpret, while interactive data analysis tools enable users to more effortlessly uncover valuable insights from the data. This trend will encourage businesses to place greater emphasis on user experience, helping them gain deeper data insights and ultimately enhancing both the efficiency and accuracy of their analytics processes.

Fourth, data governance and privacy protection will receive even greater attention. In the context of data globalization, information security will become the top strategic priority—ranging from national-level cybersecurity to enterprise-level information safety. Meanwhile, as artificial intelligence continues to advance, information security is also facing new challenges. Key concerns include safeguarding against attacks, implementing robust upgrades and backups, identifying and fixing bugs, and developing effective scripting tools. Moreover, ensuring data security and conducting regular service inspections are critical components of maintaining the integrity of data centers. With the emergence of novel internet-based models and the relentless evolution of hacking techniques, cybersecurity will increasingly remain one of the most pressing issues for every data center.

Fifth, the issue of greening data center infrastructure has become urgently pressing. Data centers require vast amounts of electricity to keep servers, storage devices, backup systems, cooling mechanisms, and other critical infrastructure running—leading to rapidly increasing energy consumption and carbon emissions. Meanwhile, China’s ambitious goals of "reaching peak carbon emissions before 2030" and achieving "carbon neutrality by 2060" present a formidable challenge. How to realize green, low-carbon, and high-quality development is now a key test for data centers.

In 2023, data-driven development will be elevated to the national level, coinciding with the accelerating global wave of digitalization. Guided by national policies, the data center industry will accelerate its move toward intensive, green, and highly efficient growth. Data centers serve as critical infrastructure for the digital economy and are also the driving force behind the advancement of informatization and intelligent development. As foundational assets functioning as both data hubs and computing power cores, they will fully support China's ambition to become a global leader in the data economy.
